Pas de Peyrol
Description
At 1,589 meters, the Pas de Peyrol is the highest road pass in the Massif Central. Located at the foot of the iconic Puy Mary pyramid, it provides access to the summit of the Puy Mary.
The pass is located at the intersection of three major roads, making it a busy and popular transit point. From the pass, you can reach Aurillac via the Jordanne Valley (through Mandailles-Saint-Julien), Salers (via the Col de Neronne), and Dienne via the Santoire Valley (through Lavigerie).
The roads leading to the Pas de Peyrol offer breathtaking views. These are narrow, winding mountain roads that you’ll often have to share with other vehicles.... Traffic restrictions are in place for RVs and trucks.
Depending on weather conditions, the time of year, or your mode of transportation, you can reach the Pas de Peyrol by car, motorcycle, bicycle, RV, bus, or even shuttle!
- Cyclists, follow in the footsteps of the Tour de France...
- Motorcyclists, treat yourselves! “L’Auvergne à moto” offers numerous routes that take you over this pass...
- Parking: A designated parking lot is available; parking elsewhere may result in a fine.
- Shuttles run from mid-July through late August.
- Tour buses, RVs, and trucks under 9 metric tons. One-way traffic patterns are in effect; details are available online at: https://www.puymary.fr/se-deplacer-et-se-stationner-puy-mary-acces/
- Winter closure of access roads to the Pas de Peyrol: Every winter, snow forms large drifts, particularly on the north slope of Puy Mary. Due to these difficult weather conditions, the pass is generally closed from the first snowfall in November until early May.
From the Pas de Peyrol, you can park your car (paid parking) and then hike to the summit of Puy Mary in 30 minutes (one way) via a well-maintained trail to the orientation table located at the summit. You can also continue along the GR®400 trail, enjoy the many summer activities offered by the visitor center, or browse the restaurant and souvenir shop....
*In July and August, for a more comfortable visit, we encourage you to plan your visit outside of peak hours. Recommended times: 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
