Village of Chalvignac

Chalvignac

Description

One cannot mention Chalvignac without listening to the sound of the river Dordogne which lies at the bottom of the village.

But Chalvignac tells a story too, the story of Miremont which was a fortress dividing France (on the Auvergne side) from England (on the Limousin side) during the 100 year war. When in 1575 the fighting was at its fiercest, the famous Madeleine de St- Nectaire successfully led the protestants and defeated the Catholics... Also worth a visit is the Romanesque Eglise St- Martin (church) with capitals, stunning murals, fours, the more traditional heritage and the "Barrage de l'Aigle". You can also discover the world of birds in this wild land, tormented and imposing.
