Description

Picnic area in a shaded spot along the Aspre River.

Fontanges stretches lazily along the right bank of the Apre, a tributary of the Maronne, at the bottom of a valley that appears to be formed by two valleys one on top of the other. The entrance to the valley, to the west, during the feudal era, near the Saint-Michel rock, was defended by fortified castles that formed a fortress belonging to several owners.
Discover Fontanges, a medieval village at an elevation of 680 meters, nestled in the heart of the Auvergne volcanoes near Salers, with its monolithic chapel carved into the rock in 1896, its 15th-century church, its castles, its twelve municipal guesthouses, its 2-star hotel-restaurant “L’Auberge de l’Aspre,” its grocery store, its hiking trails, its campground, its shaded promenade along the Aspre, and its trout-filled river.
